Eucalyptus viridis
Common name: Green Mallee
A versatile plant with dark, lustreless green leaves that can grow up to 9m in height.
Depending on the region, it can be either a shrub or small tree, and has a lignotuber with multiple trunks.
The stem width ranges from 6 to 19cm, and its bark is box at the base and gum on the upper parts. Its narrow leaves measure approximately 0.8cm in width and less than 12cm in length, though some have been recorded to be larger.
This particular species of eucalyptus is found in semi-arid regions of southeastern Australia, spanning four states.
It is adaptable to various soil types, from poorly drained clays to well drained sand. Once established, it has a high tolerance for drought, making it a valuable choice for a low windbreak in hot and dry climates.
It can also form dense thickets on stony ridges and loamy-clayey soils, providing useful stock shelter.
Additionally, planting a shelterbelt of this species can create a wildlife corridor by connecting existing habitats.
When protected from fire and given good soil, Eucalyptus Viridis can develop into a small bushy tree. Its low growth and water requirements also make it a suitable option for use as a street tree.
