The Brachychiton populneus is well-equipped to survive in arid climates due to its drought-tolerant nature and its extended trunk which acts as a water storage device.
This versatile tree has been utilized by Australian Aboriginal clans and tribes as a source of bush food, with the seeds contained in the seed pod being roasted and consumed after the fine hairs are removed.
The tree also serves as a reliable source of water, as its roots can be accessed by boring into the trunk.
Additionally, the leaves are used as emergency fodder for animals during times of drought.
European settlers have even used the seeds as a coffee substitute after roasting and crushing them.
The deep and sturdy roots of this tree have minimal impact on agriculture, while also providing support for honey production.
Found from north-eastern Victoria to Townsville and throughout coastal and inland areas, B. populneus is a hardy species that thrives in a variety of well-drained soil types, including rocky outcrops of granite or limestone and also thriving on deeper soils in some areas.
