Common name: Ashby's banksia.

2m

Banksia ashbyi is the most northern representative of all banksias in Western Australia.

It has two variations in its distribution.

In the northern portion of its range, as far down as Shark Bay, it is a lignotuberous shrub that can reach up to 2 metres in height, growing on red sand dunes close to the coast.

In the southern regions, it is a non-lignotuberous shrub or a small tree that can reach up to 8 metres in height.

These plants are sensitive to fire and rely on seed for regeneration.

Despite their differences in appearance, both forms of Banksia ashbyi have similar characteristics. The leaves are long and narrow, measuring about 200-300 mm in length and 30 mm in width, with deeply serrated edges. The flower spikes are cylindrical and prominent, appearing at the tip of the branches. They are typically 150 mm.

With its vibrant terminal flowers, Banksia ashbyi is an exceptional ornamental species that is also perfect for cut flower production.

It is well-suited to dry summer climates and can tolerate moderate frost, making it a versatile choice for any garden. This shrub thrives in well-drained, preferably sandy soils, and is a favorite among honey-eating birds.
