Chocolate Lily - Arthropodium strictum seeds
The Chocolate Lily, scientifically known as Arthropodium strictum, is a tufted plant that grows up to 80cm tall and features blue-violet flowers with a rich chocolate scent.
These flowers bloom on 1.2m high spikes from August to January, making for a visually stunning display when planted in mass.
Though not widely cultivated, it is a popular choice for rockeries or as informal drifts under taller shrubs, especially in native landscapes.
This plant is also known for its self-sowing capabilities, making it easy to maintain.
Additionally, historically, the underground tubers were consumed by indigenous people, and the edible flowers can be added to salads for a unique taste.
Native to grasslands, woodlands, and forests in South Australia, Victoria, and parts of New South Wales and Tasmania, this plant is considered a threatened flora in Tasmania.
